The full story
Rebecca draws upon the performative attributes of repetition and re-iteration inherent in printmaking media. She is particularly interested in how such repetitive processes might articulate or correspond with ways of thinking, being and acting.
Most recently she has been reactivating superseded printing and dyeing techniques using dye extracted from plants gathered at urban restoration sites (such as her local creek, The Merri, in Melbourne’s north). Rebecca’s walking body or the bodies of fellow restoration volunteers re-introduce the resulting textiles to the sites, or she installs them in situ.
I have collaborated with Rebecca to redesign her website and produce multiple exhibition and project publications.
In order to capture the essence of her art practice and avoid adding further layers of meaning, each project required a restrained design approach.
For her project publication “Walking the Merri: From Source to Confluence”, we introduced Rebecca’s characteristic dyeing technique to their making. The result was a hand-bound, limited edition, using book-binding thread dyed by Rebecca in a variety of unique colours. The exquisite hues were derived from a range of weed varieties she had collected in the field.
